What is considered a bladder or bowel issue?

  • Urgency – feeling like you need to go a lot of the time, even if you’ve just gone
  • Frequency – voiding more often than usual
  • Hesitancy – trying to go, but it’s difficult to get started
  • Leakage – urine or feces involuntarily released
  • Dysuria – pain with urination
  • Dyschezia – pain with defecation
  • Nocturia – waking through the night to void
  • Frequent UTIs – bladder infections
  • Retention – the inability to void or defecate or feeling like you haven’t fully emptied

Who knew there were so many ways that your bladder and bowel could cause problems? While some folks move through life voiding when needed and not really thinking about it otherwise, others may have one (or more) of these issues shows up. 

When your physician has ruled out infection or other medically-related cause, what’s left to do? This is where physical therapy comes in! The pelvic floor and lower abdomen are critical in urinary and bowel function. When they are not functioning optimally, any of these symptoms may appear.
