What is Sex Counseling
By: Dr. Laura Ross
The word “sex” as an action means different things to different people. For some folks that’s being connected with a partner or partners on a deep emotional level. Other folks think about the physical sensations and/or pleasure associated with sex. Sometimes sex is about being curious and exploring while other times it’s about appeasing a partner, power or even relieving stress. No matter the reason for why you’re having sex, or not having sex, it’s valid and Sex Counseling can help support you to have the kind of experience that you want.
As a Pelvic PT I understand the anatomic and physiologic reasons that you might be having a challenge experiencing the sex you want. With my training as a Sex Counselor I can also help you to work through some of the psychological, sociocultural and relational factors that are at play. Factors like pain, decreased interest, diminished arousal, erectile difficulties, rapid ejaculation or orgasm difficulties have not only a physical component but are often as affected by psychological factors such as anxiety or worry, sociocultural factors like purity culture or rigid sexual expectations and relational issues like communication challenges with partners or a mismatch in the desired frequency of sex. By providing holistic treatment and practical solutions Sex Counseling can help you get to the kind of sex you want.
I work with all genders of folks, all orientations (including ACE folks) and relationship structures. Sometimes we focus on a combination of PT and Sex Counseling, other times a focus on Sex Counseling alone is most appropriate. My aim is to help you achieve your goals, whatever those may be.
